Take Action: Make MidAmerican Energy Listen to Iowans

Right here in Iowa, we have an incredible opportunity to significantly cut carbon emissions that are contributing to the devastating effects of climate change. But we’re going to have to up the ante if we want to succeed.

Sign our petition to the Des Moines City Council TODAY!

The city of Des Moines is currently meeting with MidAmerican Energy to renegotiate a franchise agreement to give them a monopoly on providing gas and electricity to the city. The current 25-year contract expires in June.

This is a key opportunity to bring MidAmerican - Iowa’s largest energy monopoly and biggest carbon polluter - to the table to win changes that benefit all of Iowa.

We are calling on Des Moines City Council to refuse approving a new franchise agreement until they get these three commitments from MidAmerican Energy:

  • Phase out their five remaining coal plants in Iowa by 2030 and replace them with wind and solar plus energy storage for 24/7 carbon-free electricity

  • Increase funding to insulate and weatherize Iowa homes to lower energy bills and save on energy use

  • Stop utility shutoffs and provide energy debt relief for working families (MidAmerican made a record $883 million in profits in 2021!)

The latest IPCC report continues to make the path forward very clear: it's either people and the planet or fossil fuels.

That's where you and I come in:

We need to demonstrate widespread community support to push our elected leaders to action. Organizationally, we want to add 1,000 petition names to this effort to put pressure on city council and to build our people power.

Please add your name to our petition:

Tell Des Moines City Council & MidAmerican Energy that Iowans demand BOLD climate action!
