Urbandale – The Environmental
Protection Commission (EPC) met today and voted to move forward
with the rule making process to limit manure application to land
going into soybeans. The approved Notice of Intended Action (NOIA)
limits application of manure to 100 lbs N per acre, with a full
ban following in five years, provided the EPC at the time approves.
Iowa CCI members are disappointed by the progressive weakening of
the rule.
“Iowans need clean water, and we need
it now,” said Keith Kuper, CCI member from Ackley. “I’m
disappointed that we have to wait five years for this ban when it’s
just common sense.”
A public comment period will now be open,
after which the EPC will finalize a draft of the rule that will
go to the Administrative Rules Review Committee (ARRC) for final
approval.
