CCI claims victory in Vilsack veto of factory farm bill

Des Moines – Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement members applaud Governor’s Vilsack veto of Senate File 2076 today. CCI members believe this bill would have taken away property-owner rights while making it easier for factory farms to build or expand. CCI members led the fight against the bill.

SF 2076 would allow a farm tenant to sign a manure agreement to spread manure on farm land. Currently, only the land owner has the authority to sign a manure agreement for the property.

CCI members concerns with SF 2076:

  • This legislation would have put decision-making authority in the wrong hands. Land owners have the most interest in their property. They are in the best position to make a decision about manure easements because they have the most to lose or gain.

  • This legislation was just another attempt to chip-away at the already minimal factory farm state regulations.

Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement is a 30-year old organization with thousands of members across the state from all walks of life who talk, act and get things done on critical issues affecting everyday Iowans. For more information, visit www.iowacci.org.
