Des Moines
– Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement members applaud
Governor’s Vilsack veto of Senate File 2076 today. CCI members
believe this bill would have taken away property-owner rights while
making it easier for factory farms to build or expand. CCI members
led the fight against the bill.
SF 2076 would allow a farm tenant to sign
a manure agreement to spread manure on farm land. Currently, only
the land owner has the authority to sign a manure agreement for
the property.
CCI members concerns with SF 2076:
- This legislation would have put decision-making
authority in the wrong hands. Land owners have the most interest
in their property. They are in the best position to make a decision
about manure easements because they have the most to lose or gain.
- This legislation was just another attempt
to chip-away at the already minimal factory farm state regulations.
