Ingleside Hills neighbors seeing change

In Des Moines’ Ingleside Hills neighborhood north of Forest Avenue, the problem is abandoned housing. Over 30% of the houses are either vacant, a public nuisance or scheduled for demolition. Some houses have been empty for nearly 30 years.

But in the spring of 2005, CCI members took steps to change that. The efforts of Ingleside Hills residents has spurred city officials and local landlords into action.

After sitting in disrepair for almost two years, an old Victorian house that serves as a gateway into the neighborhood is now being rehabbed and a family has already purchased it. And, a stretch of Washington Street that lacked curbs and was riddled with potholes has been newly paved.

Members are also working with First American Bank to address abandoned housing (Over 30% of the houses in Ingleside are either vacant, a public nuisance, or scheduled for demolition). First American Bank has agreed to allocate $200,000 per year to the Ingleside neighborhood to purchase abandoned houses so they can either be rehabbed or rebuilt and sold to families who want to be homeowners.
