Every year in August, neighborhoods that
directly border the Iowa State Fairgrounds on Des Moines' east side
are littered with the trash of thousands of fairgoers. In December
2003, members of Fairground Neighbors for Community Improvement,
the Laurel Hill Neighborhood Association, the Gray's Woods Neighborhood
Association and the ACCENT Neighborhood came together to address
the issue.
Neighbors believed that part of the problem
was the absence of garbage receptacles. Lacking other options, fairgoers
threw their trash on the ground as they returned to their cars.
In February, residents met with the Fairground's Plant Operations
Director to propose solutions. As a result, the Iowa State Fair
agreed not only to place and empty large trash receptacles at each
of the Fairground's exits but also at key locations throughout the
neighborhoods.
A great win and excellent example of what
can be done when people come together to work on an issue.
