In May, residents of the Starlight
Trailer Park in Marshalltown, and members of Latinos en Acción
de CCI teamed up to hold the trailer park owner accountable for
inflating water bills.
When they calculated what the water bills would have been if they
had paid the city directly, residents found that the trailer park
management was charging them nine times
the amount that Marshalltown Water Works was charging. One resident’s
monthly water bill alone was $220.66!
Members immediately contacted the owner, asking for a meeting to
discuss the issue and get refunds. The owner responded and by June,
residents’ bills were significantly smaller. In August a meeting
was held to develop a specific plan for how members would be refunded.
The owner committed to credit everyone who was overcharged by October
1.
“I feel good about our victory. We couldn’t have done
it without the help of CCI. Our park is more united now because
we have worked together to make the owner hear our concerns,”
said CCI member Maria Elena Rodriguez, who lives in the Starlite
Trailer Park.
