CCI members and local residents send a strong message:
Racial profiling and discrimination will notbe tolerated

Over 90 CCI members and members of the public attended a meeting at the CCI office on October 27 to address racial profiling by a Polk County Deputy. Polk County Sheriff Dennis Anderson was invited to attend the meeting,
but has ignored CCI’s request for a meeting since August.

During the meeting, three CCI members laid out their case against a Polk County deputy who they believe stopped them for nothing more than the color of their skin. In all instances, CCI members were driving the speed limit and were of no hazard to other drivers. Members believed they were pulled over because they are Hispanic. Several members of the public also gave testimony of being pulled over unjustly and talked about this widespread problem.

The U.S. Department of Justice has contacted CCI and the Sheriff’s office to discuss the cases. CCI members met with them on October 31.

CCI members wants to build a relationship with the Sheriff’s office, as they have done with the Des Moines Police Department, and work for positive changes for the Latino community in Des Moines.
