CCI members met with Police Chief McCarthy & Congressional aides

On April 14, over 130 Des Moines CCI members and community supporters turned out for a meeting with Des Moines Police Chief William McCarthy and aides of Senators Grassley and Harkin. CCI members and community leaders testified to the practical need for licenses for immigrant families and the advantages of having safe, tested drivers on our roads. Members urged Senators Grassley and Harkin to work against legislation that would prevent states from issuing driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.

Police Chief McCarthy shared his strong support for access to driver’s licenses and identification for all Iowa residents. In a letter to Senators Harkin and Grassley, McCarthy said, “We cannot pretend that undocumented persons are not here and they are not driving vehicles on our streets. By making it easier for them to obtain state driver’s licenses, we can insure that they pass driver’s license tests and have the ability to obtain vehicle insurance.”
