Des Moines Register editorials blasts state's unsafe water

9/20/05 Des Moines Register editorial covers CCI’s Clean Water campaign victory   On September 19, CCI members spoke out at an Environmental Protection Commission meeting in favor of efforts by the Department of Natural Resources to strengthen factory farm regulations. The EPC voted 6-2 to refer a large-scale dairy factory that had two separate manure spills within about a month of each other to the Attorney General’s office for stronger enforcement action and included the requirement for the dairy to obtain a Clean Water Act (CWA) permit.

The EPC vote is a good first step in CCI’s campaign to have the Clean Water Act enforced in Iowa for factory farms. The CWA has been on the books for 30 years!

9/13/05 Des Moines Register editorial blast State's unsafe water
The September 13 Des Moines Register had an excellent editorial "No need to look south for dirty water" about Iowa’s unsafe water. The editorial explains that the current high E. coli level in the waters in New Orleans because of the Hurricane is less than E. coli levels on a regular basis in Iowa. The Register blamed Iowa’s factory farms for the problem by calling for “stricter enforcement of manure regulations and stiffer fines for violations” to clean up Iowa’s waters.
