Meet New CCI Members - Everardo and Tomasa Fonseca

Everardo and Tomasa Fonseca live in Marshalltown with their three daughters. They moved to Iowa in 1995 after living in Schuylar, Nebraska. Tomasa is a counselor for the Family Education Center in a local elementary school and Everardo is a Quality Control Inspector at the Swift packing plant in Marshalltown. In their spare time, they study English, participate in church activities and attend their daughters' school activities. Both Tomasa and Everardo served on the temporary organizing committee to form Latinos en Acción de CCI. In August 2003, Tomasa was elected chair of the chapter and Everardo was elected Treasurer.

What do you like about living in Iowa?
We like Iowa because our family can make a decent living and live peacefully. Iowa is a very calm and homey state. Our daughters love the schools and we feel like they are getting a good education.

Why did you get involved with CCI?
We got involved because we think CCI has a good mission that impacts the community in a positive way. We were impressed that the organization wanted to know more about our concerns and the problems in the Hispanic community. We like taking part in solving these problems and feel good about having an organization of 2,100 members and staff backing us up.

What do you like about being a part of CCI?
The most exciting part about being members of CCI has been getting to know other people. We like to share our ideas and concerns and learn how we can solve problems together. Because CCI is a diverse group of people from different backgrounds, we can learn to understand what the overarching problems are from different points of view. We care about the issues facing all CCI members because we see that we are all brothers and sisters and are concerned about the welfare of everyone.

What do you think is the key to the success of CCI?
The people. Not much can be done as individuals, but as a group we can knock down all sorts of barriers and solve many more problems. The reason why Latinos en Acción de CCI has been so successful is because we are united and organized.
