Meet CCI member Francisco
Contreras
Francisco
Contreras is a Latinos en Acción de CCI member from Marshalltown.
Originally from Jalisco, Mexico, he immigrated to the United States
in 1977. He moved to Iowa from California in the 1990s to be with
his brother and join him in working at the local meat packing plant.
In August 2005, he became a citizen of the United States. Becoming
a citizen was important to him so that he could vote and have his
family visit.
Francisco is married and has two sons and
a daughter living in Mexico. In his free time he enjoys practicing
soccer, going for walks, riding his bike and reading. Francisco
has been an active CCI member for two years.
1.) What got you involved with CCI?
I joined after attending a “Know Your Rights” workshop
for meatpacking workers that CCI hosted in 2005. I stay involved
because I’m excited to work with other members and help them
find the solutions to problems.
2.) What do you think is the
key to the success of CCI?
The open line of communication between members and staff is key.
Also key is having members be involved in the leadership and strategic
planning process.
3.) What do you like about
being part of CCI?
CCI is strong, insistent and
doesn’t give up. I enjoy working with the other members and
learning about issues. I also think it is good that CCI has a mix
of members so we can all better understand the problems that affect
everyone and work together for solutions.
