Septic Systems

Members of Adair-Madison Regional CCI challenged Madison County’s septic system inspection policy after County Zoning Director Jeff Nicholl adopted new policies that put an unfair financial burden on rural residents. Members asked that Nicholl change the policies and identify alternative funding sources to assist low-income residents with repairs.

Members organized around this issue for over a year and scored some great victories. The county agreed to:

  • search for grants for low-income families to cover costs of replacing outdated septic systems.

  • send postcards to resident with mechanical septic systems reminding them to pay the annual fee.

  • adopt an inspection policy at time of sale that protects both buyers & sellers.
