Southeast Iowa CCI members continue their
campaign to reduce the theft of anhydrous ammonia - a common farm
chemical used to manufacture methamphetamine. Members are:
- distributing “Hot Spot Cards”
at local businesses and at meetings and events, allowing residents
to anonymously report meth activity to local law enforcement officials;
- educating farmers on simple things they
can do to protect themselves against anhydrous theft;
- working with law enforcement officials
to increase patrol of fields and other areas where anhydrous is
stored; and
- running newspaper ads to educate the
public about the problem.
CCI’s work to address meth in rural
areas was highlighted in the Iowa State Association of Counties
May 2003 newsletter, which goes out to all of Iowa’s 99 county
sheriff departments. As a result, we’ve received calls from
around the state seeking assistance and various newspapers ran stories
that featured our work on meth. |
