Action Needed! Help ban corporate meatpackers
from owning livestock!
Why is
it a problem for packers to own livestock?
Corporate meatpackers are using ownership of hogs and cattle to
force independent producers to take lower prices for their livestock,
which drives them out of business. Packers also raise their hogs
in factory farms, which means more environmental and economic problems
for rural communities.
What would
the packer ban do?
Passing a packer ban would amend the Packers and Stockyards Act
to make it unlawful for a packer to own, feed or control livestock
for more than 7 days before slaughter. Pork packers like Smithfield
would have 18 months to divest of their livestock production operations.
Packers of beef or any other type of livestock would have 180 days
to divest. Smaller packers that own 1 livestock processing plant
are exempted from the packer ban.
You can help
pass the packer ban!
Passing the packer ban is one of the most important things Congress
can do to help independent livestock producers.
- Call
or write your U.S. Representative today!
Contact your U.S. Senators and Representative and tell
them to support the packer ban. Now is the time to take a stand
against concentration and for competition. Work to pass the packer
ban as the first step in restoring competitive markets to agriculture.
You can contact your Representative by calling the Congressional
Switchboard at 202-224-3121 OR by using the contact forms here.
- Talk
to the media in your area about the effort to pass a federal packer
