Iowa Farm Bureau has a consistent
record of siding with corporate agriculture over small family farms
in the state.
• They lobbied hard for House File
519, a law that opened the gates for the expansion of hog factories
in Iowa.
• They are staunchly opposed to local control and allowing
Iowans to regulate livestock production in their own counties.
• They oppose any environmental regulations protecting clean
air and water.
• They oppose a ban on the use of earthen manure lagoons that
hold millions of gallons of raw feces and urine.
• They have pushed for legislation that would make it more
difficult to clean up pollution caused by factory farms in Iowa’s
rivers, lakes and streams.
Iowa CCI, on the other hand, has led
the fight for family farms and the environment. Some of our regular
activities and accomplishments include:
• Helping more than 3,000 family farmers
save their farms from foreclosure
• Helping farmers obtain affordable credit
• Acting on the side of democracy and local control by opposing
legislation that makes it easier for corporate agriculture to run
over small farmers
• Putting pressure on the Iowa DNR to establish strong clean
air and water laws that protect the health of rural residents
• Supporting Iowa’s economy by enacting a direct marketing
program to connect urban consumers with family farmers
• Continuing to stand with independent pork producers to end
the mandatory pork check-off
Farm Bureau may claim that they support
Iowa’s farmers and economy, but their track record shows the
truth. Their actions definitely show that they do not share the
interest of most Iowans in clean air and water, local control and
strong, vibrant communities.
