Did you know....
- The three largest factory farm corporations
in Iowa alone generate the waste equivalent of 10 million people
-- 3 times the population of Iowa?
- An Iowa State University study found
that manure from some factory farm lagoons was leaking at more
than twice the rate allowed by law?
- Factory farm manure spills have killed
tens of thousands of fish in Iowa?
Members of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement
are working to protect our ground and surface water from the pollution
caused by factory farms. Our efforts have led the Iowa Department
of Natural Resources (DNR) to levy nearly a dozen manure violations
and fines against hog factory corporations.
In June 2004, we helped develop the report:
“Threatening
Iowa's Future: Iowa's Failure to Implement and Enforce the Clean
Water Act for Livestock Operations" which documents Iowa’s
failure to regulate thousands of factory farm operations, despite
federal laws clearly requiring the state to do so.
Now we’re working to implement the
recommendations of the report. In September 2007, we filed a legal
petition with the federal Environmental Protection Agency requesting
that they force the Iowa DNR to begin issuing Clean Water Act Permits.

Local control will allow local communities
to prevent the construction of factory farms that threaten their
water quality. Help show widespread support to protect our natural
resources from factory farm air and water pollution.
