“Only when the
last tree has died; and the last river been poisoned; and the last
fish been caught will we realize that we cannot eat money.”
...19th Century Cree Indian
saying
If you have driven around Iowa, you have
probably noticed an addition to the landscape: row after row of
long metal buildings.
These buildings are factory farms -- part
of a trend started about 15 years ago by giant agribusiness corporations
attempting to maximize their profits.
Family farmers, rural residents and other
concerned Iowans are fighting back as factory farms pollute our
air, water and soil, uproot social structures, drive family farmers
out of business, and threaten our quality of life.
