Food From Family Farms

Family Farm Chicken, Lamb & Turkey

Kevin Shilling
Greenfield, Iowa

About our farm:
My fiancée Phyllis, her son Brian and I run our farm about 3_ miles from Greenfield. I began farming regularly in 1998 because I grew up on a farm and always wanted to come back to farming.

How we raise our animals:
We raise about 40 turkeys, 30 chickens and 10 lamb a year. Our animals eat grass and milk and receive no vaccinations. They are raised naturally with plenty of room to roam. We also raise squash, pumpkin and corn.

Why buy from family farmers:
Consumers should buy from family farmers because it’s old-fashioned, home grown food that tastes better. You can buy from Smithfield and pay whatever they charge because they will have pushed all of the family farmers out of the market. By buying from farmers like us, you know where your meat comes from. Our meat hasn’t sat frozen on a shelf and won’t be involved in a major meat recall. The animal is also healthier. It can’t be a healthy animal if it’s covered in manure.

Our involvement with CCI:
We have been CCI members since 2001 because it’s not right for someone to do whatever they want without consulting their neighbors, whether it’s having a loud party or building a factory farm. CCI is an organized effort that gets something done, rather than sitting around complaining and not doing anything about it.

How to contact us:
To order any of our farm fresh food, call us at 641-743-2515 or e-mail kevin5@iowatelecom.net. We can arrange the details of the order by phone.
