Family Farm Lamb
Kurt & Arliss Kelsey
Iowa Falls, Iowa

About
our farm:
Arliss and I live on a farm about 5 miles from Iowa Falls and run
our farming operation with our son Kent. In addition to our son
Kent and his wife Sara, we have a daughter Letha and son in law,
Luke. I began farming in 1968 and am the fourth generation on this
“no-till” farm, meaning wind and water erosion is prevented
by not tilling or chiseling the soil.
How we
raise our animals:
We market 60 lambs per year as well as corn, soybeans, oats and
hay. Our animals aren’t fed antibiotics and are free to run
around outside and are able to eat and drink at their will. We sell
to 4H kids, at the auction and also direct market our lambs.
Why buy
from family farmers:
Consumers know where their food is coming from when they buy from
family farmers. Our lambs are treated humanely and are not fed any
antibiotics, animal by-products or hormones. It’s honest,
clean food.
Our involvement
with CCI:
We have been members of CCI since 1996. We joined because we wanted
to do something about the hog factories that were threatening to
move in close to our home. Through CCI we have been able to win
victories and are now able to control things we were once unable
to control. We’ve fought and won on many issues, including
a ban against a packing plant that was threatening to move in as
the largest beef packing plant in the world.
