Family Farm Meats
Phil & Barbara Hueneke
Bellevue, Iowa

About
our farm:
Barbara and I farm 13 miles north of Bellevue and run Gateway Natural
Meats. We have three daughters, Laurie, Jennifer and Lisa, who all
help out on the farm. We began farming in 1977 because I grew up
on a farm and always wanted to have a farm. I also enjoy working
with people.
How we
raise our animals:
We raise a variety of animals including 50 hogs, 50 beef, and 300
chickens. We also market dairy, lamb, cheese and eggs that we buy
directly from other producers. Our animals don’t receive antibiotics,
hormones or chemical feed additives. They are raised outdoors and
are fed all-natural enzymes, vitamins and trace minerals.
Why buy
from family farmers:
Buying from family farmers is an investment for your family’s
health. The meat is more nutritious and helps your immune system
handle stress and other environmental factors because it doesn’t
have toxins. By buying direct, a family is supporting many family
farmers, as I represent about a dozen other farmers. Food is fresher
and you get the convenience of home delivery.
Our involvement
with CCI:
We have been active with CCI since 1992 when the organization promoted
our farm tours. We joined because we have lived and experienced
many of the issues and know of the struggles that CCI members are
going through. We support a group that is willing to fight unfair
government policies and unfair markets. CCI has put us in contact
with other farmers who we have been able to share experiences with.
