Food From Family Farms

Family Farm Apples, Honey & Candles
Beaver Creek Farm & Prairie Song Apiary

Charles Carpenter and David Tousain
Coon Rapids, Iowa

About our farm:
We keep an apiary and have an orchard on our farm 8 miles from Coon Rapids. We started farming in 1979 because we wanted to create a model for alternatives to the industrial way of farming.

How we raise our products:
We keep 30 hives of bees from which we produce honey and beeswax candles. We also have a 30 acre orchard of apple and cherry trees. We take good care of our bees because pollinating is very important for the environment. We monitor the conditions of our orchard very closely and use a low-spray program, spraying only when necessary.

Why buy from family farmers:
We feel that if you’re interested in Iowa CCI issues, you have a responsibility to support alternative methods of farming. Also, our apples are fresher and of better quality than store bought apples. Commercial honey is often blended; ours is from single floral sources and has better flavor.

Our involvement with CCI:
We have been active with CCI since 1996. We joined because Iowa CCI was addressing important large-scale hog confinement issues. People who live in the country are “sitting ducks” for problems with large-scale hog confinements. We also support CCI’s urban work.

How to contact us:
To order family farm apples, honey or candles, call us at 712-683-5804. We sell through direct marketing, at the Des Moines Farmer’s Market and to a few retail outlets. Call to arrange a time to pick up your products or to have them delivered.
