Food From Family Farms

Family Farm Beef, Chicken & Pork

Mike Baxter
Muscatine, Iowa

About my farm:
I am a fifth generation Iowa farmer and live 8 miles from Muscatine. My son, Edmond, also helps out on the farm. I enjoy farming because it’s how I was raised and have farmed my entire life.

How I raise my animals:
I raise hogs for Niman Ranch and also raise chickens, ducks and grass fed beef, which has health advantages over grain fed. My animals are raised according to Animal Welfare Institute standards. I will custom raise hogs for consumers and will raise them however a consumer wants, as long as it can be done in a humane manner.

Why buy from family farmers:
I have never sold a pig to a packing plant. Consumers should buy from family farmers because of the health benefits. I can raise a superb product that inhibits disease. Also, by buying direct, food is cheaper because you are cutting out the middle man. You can vote with your food dollar as a way to fight for who you want producing your food. Food directly from a family farm is of better quality and selection. You can have your meat cut anyway you want and with the seasonings you choose. It’s important to know where your food comes from.

My involvement with CCI:
I have been a member of CCI since 1998. I joined because I liked how CCI was publicizing the ills of hog factories. I also agreed with their articles on antibiotic resistance. I realize that people can’t fight these factories alone. It takes an organized group to have a prayer of making a difference.

How to contact me:
To order farm fresh beef, chicken, pork or duck, call 563-262-8466 or email usinland@muscanet.com. I will deliver the meat to the locker.
