Farming
& the Environment/Food From Family Farms
- For every dollar you spend on food as
a consumer, family farmers now receive 10 cents or less, compared
to as much as 70 cents just a few decades ago. When you buy directly
from family farmers, you still get an affordable product, and
you also are ensuring the farmer receives a fair price.
- Large corporate agribusinesses have
turned to practices that can hurt the environment and/or human
health, such as heavy toxic pesticide application and factory
farming. When you support a family farmer, you're supporting farming
methods that can help the environment.
- The average plate of food in the United
States has traveled around 1,300 miles from source to table. When
you buy locally, you are reducing the use of energy and fossil
fuels by reducing the distance your food travels.
